An overview of education in Armenia for students applying to study medicine

Education in Armenia is represented by both state and private higher education institutions. These education institutions operate under the responsibility of several ministries, but the majority are under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Science. For a country with around 3 million population it has 65 private and public higher education institutions, which is a comparatively high number indicating the national policy of investment in human capital. Higher education is provided by many types of institutions: institutes, universities, academies, and a conservatory.

How students should understand the structure of higher education medical qualifications in Armenia 

People from all over the world are becoming more and more interested in the higher educational institutions of Armenia. Year by year the number of foreign students who want to receive higher and postgraduate professional education in Armenia is increasing. Currently higher educational institutions of Armenia host about 7000 foreign students. There are two principal laws regulating Armenian higher education: the Law on Education (1999) and the Law on Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education (2004). The latter one sets the main structure, principles of organisation and funding mechanisms, as well as bases for systematic reform and improvement of higher education. These laws are supported by a set of by-laws covering areas such as degree system, quality assurance, National Qualifications Framework, academic credits and their transfer, student mobility, social dimension and etc.

What is the qualification structure for tertiary students undertaking a medicine programme in Armenia

The improvement and development of the educational system has always been prioritised in Armenia. Currently with the Bologna Process implementation as well as with partnership with other member countries degrees issued from Armenian universities are fully accredited worldwide.

Higher Education in Armenia provides studies with following degrees

  • Bachelor’s degree 4 years, Bachelor in Medicine except Dentistry (5 years)
  • Master’s degrees 2 years after obtaining the Bachelor’s degree
  • Postgraduate degrees, including PhD student programme (research 3 years) after acquisition of Master’s degree.

The academic year as rule starts on starts on September 1st is comprised of 2 semesters with 17 week accordingly. Ends in February after mid-term exams. Spring semester begins mid-February and the academic year lasts till the end of June with exams respectively Adopted to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) this enables student mobility and ensures 60 credits per year. EU and Non EU candidates can enter in Russian or English taught courses. The academic year for most Bulgarian universities begins around October 1 and comprises a Fall and Spring semester, spanning 30 weeks. Classes usually meet once a week for 75 minutes or for two 45-minute periods with a 15-minute break in between, while each programme has its own specifications concerning laboratory hours and theoretical application in labs and clinics.

What is the higher education grading system when students study medicine in Armenia

Educational Institutions in Armenia use a 10-scale grading system, where 10 is “excellent” and 5 is “sufficient”. This grading system is included in academic transcription in order to be converted and evaluated according to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). What life is like for students who study tertiary medicine abroad in Armenia
