Is Ukraine a Safe Place to Study?

One question that often weighs on the minds of international students is whether it is safe to study medicine in Ukraine. Ukraine is a very safe country to live and study in provided that you remember some basic personal security measures:

  • Avoid walking alone late at night in dark or poorly-lit streets
  • Keep any valuables and cash safe and out of sight, especially in crowded areas, tourist spots and public transport and so forth
  • It is also a good idea to always make sure that you always have personal ID with you
  • Moreover, a good tip for international students is to save the phone number of your country’s Embassy number in your mobile’s contacts as this could prove useful in an emergency.

Ukrainians are quite welcoming and open-hearted, so the friends you make here will make sure to keep you out of trouble and be your translator whenever you struggle with the language-barrier.

It is worth noting that Ukraine is trying to eliminate bribery which unfortunately is still a common issue in many areas. If you encounter any bribe demands or threats from a staff member of an educational establishment, then it is necessary to notify the police. As ever, your Ukrainian friends will help you talk to the local police who may only speak Ukrainian or Russian.
